City of Centerton issued the following announcement on May 21.

It's National Armed Forces Day.

The United States Military is composed of six branches, including the Army, Airforce, Space Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. As of this post, more than 1.3 million active-duty service members are stationed in the United States and around the world. An additional 800,000 reservists stand ready in the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. The holiday unites the country behind the men and women who currently serve in the United States military.

In 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed a law combining the administration of the branches of the Armed Forces under one entity, the Department of Defense. 2 years later the Secretary of Defense created Armed Forces Day, which was meant to unify the country's support of their service personnel. The first Armed Services day was celebrated in 1950, with President John F. Kennedy declaring it an official holiday on the third Saturday of May.

Thank you to all those who served in our Armed Forces and defended our freedoms.
