The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Senator Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act, which incorporates Congressman Steve Womack's legislation known as the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Absence and Notification Timeline (VACANT) Act. This act aims to ensure that Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers maintain necessary senior leadership for effective oversight and accountability.
Congressman Womack emphasized the importance of leadership in providing quality care to veterans, stating, "Without proper leadership at the top, veterans won’t receive the top-quality care they’ve earned and rely on." He highlighted collaboration with Senator John Boozman in working towards improved oversight at VA medical centers.
Senator Boozman remarked on the necessity of accountability within VA medical centers to enhance performance. He expressed gratitude for Congressman Womack's efforts in advancing the legislation through the House and committed to furthering its progress in the Senate.
The VACANT Act outlines specific requirements for addressing vacancies in medical center director positions. It mandates that the VA notify relevant congressional committees within 90 days when a vacancy occurs due to internal detailing. Additionally, an Acting Director must be appointed within 120 days, and a permanent director should be installed either by returning a detailed director or through new hiring within 180 days.
