This Sunday is Baptism of the Lord Sunday, a time for us to reflect upon the baptism of Jesus and the impact baptism has on our faith journey. Jesus was baptized to show he identified with humanity, to present a picture of the Trinity, to demonstrate God’s approval and affirmation, and to mark the beginning of his ministry.

In baptism, Jesus continues identification with humanity that began at his birth. The full intent was so we could have a relationship with a God of love, mercy, and grace. Jesus did not need to be baptized for forgiveness of sin, as John preached, but for the forgiveness of our sin.

For United Methodists, the sacrament of baptism is a covenant with God, the person being baptized, and the church. As we are reminded of the baptism of Jesus during the worship service this Sunday, we will also reaffirm our baptismal vows, which challenge us to face evil, stand up for justice and stand against oppression in whatever forms they present themselves.

At the beginning of a new year, God calls us to remain faithful and seek a better understanding and application of repentance, forgiveness, and discipleship as we encounter evil and injustice in a divisive and polarized time, knowing God is with us.
