Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana have introduced the Ratepayer Affordability and Transparency in Energy (RATE) Act, a bill aimed at reducing energy prices for Americans. The legislation seeks to promote grid reliability by stopping states from enforcing renewable energy mandates that could increase electricity costs.
“State requirements for less reliable, renewable energy sources, shouldn’t lead to higher energy costs for Arkansans. My bill would ensure those mandates don’t impact energy prices,” said Senator Cotton.
Senator Sheehy added, “Americans voted to make energy affordable, accessible, and reliable again. The RATE Act is a commonsense bill to strengthen our grid and lower costs for hardworking families across the country.”
The RATE Act proposes to protect grid reliability by overriding state climate policies such as renewable portfolio standards if they interfere with infrastructure planning or raise electricity prices. It also aims to guarantee that Americans pay the lowest possible cost for their electricity.
